What is Hypnotherapy basically?
Clinical hypnosis or hypnotherapy basically employs hypnosis, a complete natural state of consciousness that we all experience everyday. Hypnosis is a state in which you are consciously aware of what is happening around you and learning is possible.
Hypnosis is a state in which your logical and analytical faculties of the conscious mind, are reduced sufficiently to allow access to the deeper levels of your subconscious mind to be utilized for health benefits. It is you who is in control and if you don’t like something you can always open your eyes and say you will not do it!!
What is Hypnosis?
Unfortunately the word 'Hypnosis' is translated as 'Sam-mohan vidya' in Hindi. Sam-mohan vidya is not 'hypnosis'. But it has created a lot of misunderstanding among even educated people about the science of Hypnosis and hypnotherapy.
The science of putting a person into a state of mind in which a therapist can work with him to help him remove any kind of obstruction to live a healthy life, is called 'Hypnosis'. Once a person is put in that state of mind, any work that is done to relieve him of his issue is called 'hypnotherapy, i.e. therapy done under the 'hypnosis' state of mind.
Hypnosis is a completely natural state of mind. You enter this state many times a day without consciously realizing that you are in a light trance state. When you are driving and you accidentally miss your intended turn, when you are watching a movie or daydreaming and everything else falls away to the point that you are not aware of anything else, even if only for a moment. These are examples of very light trance states, a self-induced hypnotic state.
When you are in this state of mind, the critical factor of the mind is relaxed. For example, when you watch a movie, you are completely aware that you are in an auditorium, surrounded by other people, watching a flat screen with a projected image and recorded sound, yet you suspend your disbelief and consciously enter into a state of consciousness where you may feel genuine emotions, forget that you are surrounded by other individuals, or perhaps you don't even notice the theater any longer. Your logical mind or critical factor is still there, but imagination and emotion from the subconscious mind emerges and overrides it.
The relaxed critical factor facilitates communication between the conscious and the subconscious mind. Hypnosis works in the same way, offering the client an opportunity to relax their critical factor, their conscious thought process, and access their feelings, physical body and internal processes at a much deeper level.
Why try hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a safe and structured relationship between the client and the Hypnotherapist. Hypnosis is used to address and interact with issues, which the client brings to each hypnotherapy session.
The mind is divided into the conscious mind and subconscious mind. The conscious mind contains logic, rationalization, willpower, and short-term memory. It is the smaller area of our mind, which is said to account for 10% of our mental capacity. The subconscious mind is the larger part, sealed and gated by critical factors of the conscious mind. It contains all permanent memory, habits, and programming to generate emotions, intuition, and so on. Intuitive wisdom and creativity (some call this the Higher Self) are also important functions of the subconscious mind. Hypnotherapy relaxes your critical factor and enables the access to this conscious realm of your mind.
The hypnotherapist is like a guide who facilitates the hypnotic process. You can enter or exit the hypnotic state anytime you wish; therefore, you will not "get stuck" or lose control in hypnosis. Through our skilled guidance and your courage to remain open, we can utilize the hypnotic state as a powerful place for transformation and healing.
Most of the dis-eased state is created by carrying emotions and hurts which we are unable to release and resolve. These hurts and memories, connected to strong emotions, whether real or perceived, are stored in our subconscious minds. Mentally remembering them or being exposed to the same situations and people , generating the same feelings, emotions and hurts, makes them accumulate over a period of time, which creates an energy potential that disturbs the ecomomy and balance of the mental, emotional and the physical body. This increased negative energy potential, in turn create blockages in the systems which keep us healthy and at ease (dis-ease free). Ultimately, they prevent us from moving on.
Unlocking past blockages is an important step in hypnotherapy. Using hypnosis, we can go back to the original hurt and change out perception of it. Instead of seeing it as some awful truth, we can see it as a learning experience which helped us grow, but which no longer needs to effect us in the same way.
Also, to release past blockages, we must forgive. Since forgiving can be difficult in some situations, pretending to forgive will eventually give the same result, since even pretending to forgive will eventually become a reality. We must forgive and let go, releasing all negativity. Which we can easily do under a hypnotic state, because it gives us the real feeling.
What hypnosis is not?
Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy are not magical states or forms of mind control, they are natural processes, which have been utilized for deep relaxation, inner guidance, healing and counseling since early human civilization.
Hypnosis does not take control of your thoughts, nor can the hypnotherapist "force" you to reveal information that you do not want to reveal, in fact, you can choose to lie under hypnosis just as you can tell a lie while in a full waking state.
The Hypnotherapist has no power over you while in trance. You can bring yourself out of trance at any time and you can choose to reenter the hypnotic state just as easily.
Hypnosis does not erase your memories, nor can the hypnotherapist create "new" memories. You will not "bark like a dog" or "cluck around the office like a chicken" as you may have seen a stage hypnotist do with people during a stage performance. Those individuals were part of a show and were specifically chosen by the stage hypnotist based on criteria that has little to do with hypnosis. Stage hypnotists seek out individuals that want to perform, that have a desire to be seen in such a setting. This is not hypnotherapy.
